The Old Town contains a unique collection of Danish buildings, the oldest of which dates from around 1550. The buildings from the Renaissance are particularly striking, as the period was characterized by economic prosperity.

After the introduction of the monarchy, economic power also moved to Copenhagen, and the construction of the market towns in the rest of the country became correspondingly less conspicuous.

Borgmestergården in the Old Town

Borgmestergården is Denmark's best-preserved grocery farm from the Renaissance. It was built in Aarhus in 1597 in the time of Christian IV and belonged for centuries to the city's leading merchants, including several mayors - hence the name Borgmestergården.

In fact, in the early 1900s there were plans to demolish Borgmestergården, but despite much opposition, the history-interested Peter Holm managed to be allowed to preserve the farm, which in 1909 proved to be a major attraction at the National Exhibition.

Borgmestergården, which originally stood in Aarhus close to the Cathedral, was rebuilt in the Old Town in 1914.
