The Viking Museum in Aarhus is a very special museum, where a trip down the stairs to the exhibition room is quite literally a journey back to the city of the Vikings.

Here you can see the finds that have been made at that exact location for approx. 1000 years ago, where Nordea is located today on Store Torv.

The Aros of the Vikings

The exhibition "Back to the Viking Age" shows the Aros of the Vikings, as Aarhus was called in the Viking Age. The Viking museum belongs to it Moesgard Museum and is based on excavations at the very place where the museum is located.

The trading city of Aarhus

The many finds testify that Aarhus was already in the Viking Age an enterprising trading town inhabited by many different craftsmen. The traders had contacts to the north, south and east. Aarhus was then surrounded by an enormous defensive wall, which protected against attacks from outside and ensured that there was control over who moved in and out through the city gates.

The city's oldest murder mystery

Deep down in one of the seven half-buried pit houses, you can see the skeleton of the oldest Aarhusian that has been found to date. The way he lies testifies that we are dealing with a murder mystery from the Viking Age.

Get wiser on the Vikings

The Vikings were feared in their day. They plundered with an awe-inspiring belligerence and violence, described in contemporary sources often created in the monasteries that were victims of the ruthless attacks. At the Viking Museum you can become much wiser about the Vikings, and how the Vikings' activities were far more extensive than the piracy and looting.

Please note that you can only pay by credit card at the Viking Museum.

The museum is closed on public holidays.
