Marselisborg Forests

Distance: 10.94 Km

South of Aarhus lies Marselisborg Skovene, a forest belt of approx. 7 kilometers, which stretches along the coast. The part of the forest that is closest to the city is Marselisborg Skovene.

Beech trees, hill and valleys

There are not many Danish forests where today you can see such beautiful, large, continuous and old stands of beech as within this forest area. The terrain is very hilly with deep ravines. In many places on the coastal slopes, the clay soil has slid towards the sea, so that the trees lean out over the water and almost bow to nature.

200-300 year old beech trees

Around 1820, the forests were heavily cut down, and a large part of the forests were therefore planted after this time. But all around the forests, and especially in Moesgård Forest, there are individual 200-300-year-old beech trees that have been preserved for aesthetic reasons. They are now good breeding grounds for cave-breeding bird species, which the forest is therefore particularly rich in.

More than just a forest

In the northern part of the forests you will find, among other things, Marselisborg Castle, Marselisborg Memorial Park, Forest Botanic Garden, Aarhus Stadium, Marselisborg Zoo and Ballehage Beach with the bathing bridge and the work of art, The Infinite Bridge. In the southern part of the forests you will find Moesgaard Museum, Skovmøllen and Moesgaard Strand.

For the active

The Marselisborg forests are one of the most visited natural areas in Denmark and are used for a multitude of outdoor activities such as jogging and cycling. Although the forest has a particularly hilly terrain, it is suitable for hiking, and many riders also use the forest, which has marked riding routes. In the forests also runs an approx. 25 km. long and very varied mountain bike tracks that alternate between easy flat gravel paths and steep ascents and descents, so there is room for everyone.
