The Viking from Fregerslev

Distance: 8.64 Km

More than 1000 years ago, around the year 950, a mighty horseman was laid to rest in a burial chamber near Hørning.

The burial chamber was found in 2012 and excavated in 2017. The large burial chamber contained luxurious items that the Viking brought to Valhalla. Even the horse and the impressive gold and silver-plated riding equipment were included in the tomb.

The finds bear witness to a powerful man and family who had control over a large area during the period when Gorm the Old and then Harald Bluetooth lived and ruled. The story of the unique and extremely rare finds is today conveyed by Museum Skanderborg Perron1, where, among other things, parts of the horse's harness can be experienced.

To mark the great archaeological find, an art and history grove will be established during 2024, which conveys the Viking's final resting place with a granite monument created by artist and stonemason Laila Vestergård. With the art and history grove, the story is moved out into the middle of the citizens and with the art an extra dimension is given. It is expected to be completed in the summer of 2024.
