For most of the year, Eskelund serves as an area you can visit when you want to relax and enjoy nature or exercise outdoors. Here you are also welcome to enjoy your brought food on a picnic, play ball on the grassy areas or watch birds by the stream.
It is also possible to explore the area's large pantry, which includes raspberry and blackberry bushes, cherry, apple and pear trees or the edible mushroom, Judas ears and much more. Feel free to pick tastings for yourself as the park's pantry is for everyone.
Eskelunden as a party place
In addition to the many opportunities to use Eskelunden as a recreational area, there is also space for larger events and arrangements. It can be cultural and exercise events, concerts and not least the Aarhus festival, Northside, where up to 40.000 music-loving festival goers take the place at the beginning of June.
History of the area
Eskelunden's history is diverse and goes very far back. In fact, the use of the place can be traced back to the late Stone Age, when the locals hunted bison in the area and caught oysters in the island, which was then a fjord. Also in the time of the Vikings, the place was used - this time as a Viking shipyard, where ships were built or repaired.
In the mid-1950s and until the 1980s, the site was used as a landfill. To this day, there is still 850.000 m3 of waste underground in the area, but there is no cause for concern. There is at least 50 cm of clean soil on top of the waste, and it is not the first time in Denmark that a recreational area is placed on a former landfill.
Fast, easy and good conditions
Eskelunden is surrounded by one of Aarhus' most beautiful walking and cycling paths by Brabrand Lake, and there are good bus connections to the rest of the city.
