Museum Ovartaci in Aarhus opens the door to a wonderful world where you can discover the many facets of the human mind. The exhibitions raise questions that seek to challenge common notions and prejudices and encourage dialogue on difficult topics - for example identity and normality.

Deep down we are all far away - there is more to the madness than you think

Museum Ovartaci's foundation rests on two inseparable collections – a psychiatry historical collection with objects from the first psychiatric hospital in Denmark from 1852 until today and an internationally recognized art collection of works created by people with psychiatric diagnoses.

In Museum Ovartaci's permanent exhibition, the museum's two collections form part of a dynamic interplay that brings up-to-date topics about the human mind.

Super crazy Overtaci

At the center of the museum's collection is the artist Ovartaci, who, with his 56-year hospitalization and his unique art, is the epitome of both the institution and history as well as the freedom to express oneself through art. Ovartaci was born in Ebeltoft and christened Louis Marcussen. He came up with the name Ovartaci himself – as a paraphrase of 'Overtosse'.

Louis Marcussen, Overtaci, has in every way made a breakthrough with his art, not because he was a psychiatric patient or abnormal, but because of the undeniable strength and artistic quality found in his artistic works.

Nationally and internationally, the museum's extensive and unique art collection is an important piece on the overall art scene and in art history.

Unique insight into psychiatry

Museum Ovartaci's artists provide unique access to the fragile and multifaceted mind. Through their art, the artists show that the world can look quite different than we thought.

The museum is part of a wide range of partnerships and collaborations, offers activities for children and young people and runs the non-visited offer for the mentally vulnerable - The creative workshop The free space.

How to get to the museum

You can get directly to the museum with Light Rail L2 (stop Nehrus Allé) or with city bus 6a (stop Olof Palmes Allé).

The museum is easily accessible for wheelchair users and there are also free parking spaces at the museum.
